Невеликий огляд історії: Juniper PTX з’явився у 2011 році з основним призначенням як маршрутизатор на рівні ядра (LSR – Label Switching Router). На сьогоднішній день лінійка PTX значно розширилася в можливостях, підтримується можливість організації маршрутизатора ядра MPLS, IP Core (Full IP core, service rich core, peering, data center interconnect (DCI), тощо). Також, одним з приємних моментів є підтримка лінійних карт (FPC) для dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) та OTN.
NorthStar Controller – програмний продукт (SDN продукт), який дозволяє виконувати функції traffic-engineering, візуалізації та оптимізації MPLS ядра мережі.
Juniper’s Converged Supercore architecture – загальна концепція і принцип побудови, яка включає в себе: performance-optimized IP/MPLS routing та metro/long-haul DWDM layers.
Усього є 3 моделі маршрутизаторів Juniper PTX: PTX1000, PTX3000, PTX5000.
Для модульних PTX3000, PTX5000 існує всього 3 покоління FPC.
PTX5000 – 36 rack units (36 U); 10-Gigabit Ethernet, 40-Gigabit Ethernet та 100-Gigabit Ethernet; 8 FPC x 2 PIC = 16 PIC; підтримка FPC1 (480Gbps), FPC3 (480Gbps), FPC3 (960Gbps, розширений FIB, 2 версії капт – 2 та 3 Tbps). 7us for both IP and MPLS.

Функції Midplane:
- Data path: Data packets are transferred across the midplane from the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) on the originating FPC to the SIBs, and from the SIBs across the midplane to the PFE on the destination FPC.
- Power distribution: The PDUs are connected to the midplane, which distributes power to all the packet transport router components.
- Signal path: The midplane provides the signal path to the FPCs, SIBs, Routing Engines, Control Boards, and other system components for monitoring and control of the system.
Важливий момент: PTX5000 може бути 2 типів шасі, одне підтримує лише 2 Tbps, друге підтримує як 2, так і 3 Tbps.
PTX3000 – 22 U, 8 FPC x 1 PIC = 8 PIC, 768 10-Gigabit Ethernet, 192 40-Gigabit Ethernet, and 80 100-Gigabit Ethernet, 300mm ETSI-compliant depth, 8 Tbps forwarding capacity, only 0.8 kilowatts per Gbps power consumption, coherent DWDM, FPC1 (240Gbps), FPC3 (500Gbps и 1Tbps), FPC2 is not supported.
Функції backplane:
- Provides a data path: Data packets are transferred across the backplane from the PFE on the originating FPC to the SIBs, and from the SIBs across the backplane to the PFE on the destination FPC.
- Enables power distribution: The PSMs are connected to the backplane. The backplane distributes power to all the packet transport router components.
- Provides a signal path: The backplane provides the signal path to the FPCs, SIBs, Routing Engines, Control Boards, and other system components for monitoring and control of the system.
PTX1000 – 2 U; fixed-configuration core router, 10–Gigabit Ethernet, 40–Gigabit Ethernet, and 100–Gigabit Ethernet interfaces; 2.88 Tbps of forwarding capacity; Juniper ExpressPlus custom silicon.
На цьому пристрої використовується той же ExpressPlus silicon (ASIC), що й на картах FPC3 для PTX3000, PTX5000.
Карти FPC3 засновані на чіпсеті ExpressPlus. Карти FPC3 мають пропускну здатність 1 Tbps, 2 Tbps та 3 Tbps для PTX5000. Карти FPC3 для PTX3000 мають наступні характеристики пропускної здатності: 500Gbps та 1Tbps.
Ліцензування карток FPC3 важливо відмітити наступні моменти:
— картки з суфіксом -L — мають 256k FIB MPC3, 48k FIB mixed chassis FPC1(2) + FPC3;
— картки з суфіксом -R — мають 2M FIB + BGP scale FIB, L2VPN, MVPN, 6PE, 6vPE.
